Population

The demographic density of Tuscany is inferior to the national average, with the tendency to an ulterior decrement.

This is due to the low natality that characterizes all the regions of Central Italy.

The population is distributed in an ineguale way with much concentration in the more industrialized areas: the river basin of Florence, Prato and Pistoia, the inferior Valdarno, the Lucchesia, the Versilia and the valleys of Era and Elsa rivers.

Garfagnana, Mugello, Casentino and Val di Chiana are medium inhabited density zones.

Underpopulated are the mountain chain of Appennino, the wooded Metalliferous Hills, the argillaceous zones in the south of Siena and the plain of Maremma.

We must however consider that the countryside of Tuscany have been descovered in the last few decades by many stangers who, also holding their residence, stablily inhabit the numerous farms scattered on the hills of all the region.
